ACT Aquathlon Championships

Presented by Bilbys Triathlon Club MacDermott Pl, Lake Ginninderra

Perfect weather conditions and an ideal race site, plus the change to the international aquathlon championship format of 2.5km run, 1km swim, 2.5km run saw spectaular racing at the "Acumen Alliance Challenge" ACT Aquathlon Championships on Sunday 21 January. Thanks to Acumen Alliance's generous sponsorship there was over $1200 in prizemoney which attracted the strongest local field yet seen at this event. Simon Thompson and Anthony Parish were the ones to watch, with last year's champion Jason Chalker also in contention. At the previous weekend's ACT Sprint championships Thompson was slightly faster in the water but Parish had the faster run. A blistering first run saw the two post 2:45 min km pace runs with Parish leading into the water. Thompson passed him but Parish hitched a ride for the rest of the swim. Out onto the final run it was going to be a fight to the line. Parish dropped off crossing the dam on the way to the run turnaround. Jason Chalker put in a solid race holding off the rest off the field on the final run for 3rd place. In the women's race Jane Kargotich was never threatened, however it was a battle between training partners Rachel Meyer and Fiona Hedgecoe for the mino r places. Hedgecoe's stronger run saw her leading into the water, but Meyer powered past and built an unassailable margin going onto the final run to hold onto 2nd place. In the age groups, Geoff Hawke and Rhonda Ebeling were the fastest over 40s, and Terry Scott and Lindy Dunn the fastest over 50s, each receiving $50 prize money. A special commendation to Parissa Poulis who started in the Bilbys novice program last October and placed 3rd in females over 50! In the junior championship event Declan Brown and Patricia McKibbin's strong run legs held off their challengers, winning prize vouchers from Lonsdale St Cyclery and the Runners Shop. Geoff Wells was the lucky winner of the major barrel draw prize from Canberra Cycles - a Lightfoot Steamer wetsuit.

Gunnar Bursell

Gunnar Bursell continues to improve at a great rate after his horrific accident on the first bike leg in the triple triathlon when he was airlifted by helicopter to Canberra hospital. He had an operation to fuse vertebrae in his neck soon after the accident. He was out of hospital over last weekend walking around the house unassisted and on a frame outdoors. Signs are very positive for an excellent recovery.

Tri-ing a Triathlon Made Easy

For Canberrans tempted to try their first triathlon this weekend, a special Triathlon Orientation Package will explain all you need to know.

Triathlon ACT's first novice event in the Sunsmart series will be run this Saturday afternoon at 4pm over a 300m swim/8km cycle//2km run course.

"That's pretty "do-able" for most healthy people," says orientation program coordinator Jane Seaborn.

"The novice series combines short distances with a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

"What we're aiming to do with the Triathlon Orientation Package is take the stress out of doing your first event by explaining what triathlon is all about, covering a range of frequently asked questions and providing a comprehensive course familiarisation.

"All you need to participate is a bike of any kind and a helmet, a pair of swimmers and a singlet, a drink bottle and a pair of running shoes and a hat."

Registration for the orientation starts at 12noon with the program running from 1-3pm and the race at 4pm. Participants will be taken through the program by experienced coaches, athletes and technical officials. The Package also includes the race entry fee, insurance and $10 vouchers to both The Athlete's Foot and Lonsdale Street Cyclery.
