Simon Thompson and Sarah Fien win ACT Aquathlon ChampsSimon Thompson was in fantastic form, backing up from a 2nd place in the National series race last weekend on the Gold Coast. By the end of the first run he had a narrow lead and was never threatened. Ross Blake followed Queensland visitor Levi Fleming into the water and quickly pulled away to finish in 2nd, with Luke Keogh also using his fast swim to build up a handy buffer for the last run, taking third place. In the women's race it was a welcome return to multi-sport racing for Sarah Fien, with Raeleigh Tennant and Michelle Gallen also in contention in the strong field. Fien had a lead after the first run, but during the swim the three closed up leaving the water in a pack. Once Sarah regained her land legs she powered away again, with Raeleigh's stronger run gaining her 2nd place over Michelle. Top 3 places were awarded $500, $250 and $100 respectively, thanks to the generous sponsorhip of Acumen Alliance. In the short race Kate Fitzpatrick took overall line honours, with novice Jared Henry 1st in the men's race, each winning a $30 voucher from the Runners Shop. Full results and race report including age group awards are here.

Jason had the fastest run but was unable to close the gap, taking 2nd with Dane in 3rd. Michelle Gallen (Hunter) had a handy lead out of the water and just managed to hang onto it on the bike from fast charging Fiona Hedgecoe. Onto the run Fiona quickly built a lead, with Michelle holding onto 2nd and 3rd going to Jessica Baird.

Tuesday, 20 November 2001 Spring FlingThe elite men's race saw a welcome return to form for Ross Blake, with Simon Thompson chasing hard all the way. Gareth Halverson showed his bright prospects in the sport with a strong third place. The women's race saw a small field with Raeleigh Tennant leading from the start and never threatened. Fiona Hedgecoe was second and Jess Baird took third. The age-group fields saw some stand-out performances. Paul Smith's time was 7th fastest of the day, and Carl Fellows just keeps getting faster after a great winter of racing. In the womenıs field Kristie Ramsland and Amanda Murtagh both posted outstanding times - it would have been an interesting tussle if theyıd started in the same wave or raced in the elite race! Some age groups show signs of some great battles to come over the summer - in M35-39 less than 1 minutes separated the top 5 places! It will be interesting to see the action at the Olympic Distance championships in 2 weeks.
