Triathlon ACT 2000-2001 Summer Calendar and Results
Simon Thompson and Anthony Parish were the ones to watch, with last year's champion Jason Chalker also in contention. At the previous weekend's ACT Sprint championships Thompson was slightly faster in the water but Parish had the faster run. A blistering first run saw the two post 2:45 min km pace runs with Parish leading into the water. Thompson passed him but Parish hitched a ride for the rest of the swim. Out onto the final run it was going to be a fight to the line. Parish dropped off crossing the dam on the way to the run turnaround. Jason Chalker put in a solid race holding off the rest off the field on the final run for 3rd place.
In the women's race Jane Kargotich was never threatened, however it was a battle between training partners Rachel Meyer and Fiona Hedgecoe for the minor places. Hedgecoe's stronger run saw her leading into the water, but Meyer powered past and built an unassailable margin going onto the final run to hold onto 2nd place.
In the age groups, Geoff Hawke and Rhonda Ebeling were the fastest over 40s, and Terry Scott and Lindy Dunn the fastest over 50s, each receiving $50 prize money. A special commendation to Parissa Poulis who started in the Bilbys novice program last October and placed 3rd in females over 50!
In the junior championship event Declan Brown and Patricia McKibbin's strong run legs held off their challengers, winning prize vouchers from Lonsdale St Cyclery and the Runners Shop.
Geoff Wells was the lucky winner of the major barrel draw prize from Canberra Cycles - a Lightfoot Steamer wetsuit.
