Stromlo Offroad Duathlon Series Race 4

13 August 2000 - Deek's Forest Park, Stromlo Forest

Conditions were cool and calm. It started bucketting rain 40 minutes into the race.

The last race of the series was the same distance as race 3 but with a more technical bike leg. The jury was out whether this would make the difference needed for Rod Higgins to level the series with leader Dave Osmond, currently in training for the world mountain running championships in Germany next month. Osmond led from the start and after 1 lap was trailed by team runner Australian orienteering representative Rob Walter with Higgins in 3rd. At the end of the run he was nearly 30 seconds clear, with Walter dropping behind. Out onto the bike, Rod was pulling out all stops to make up time, and closed to within 5 seconds early on the 2nd lap of the bike before Osmond surged away again to come off the bike with a 40 second lead. A devastatingly fast final run sealed the race for him, winning with nearly a 2 minute margin.
In the women's race Australian representative orienteer Emily Viner started strongly on the first lap, but Julia Graczyk had reeled her in by the end of the first run, with Julie Quinn still in touch. Graczyk's biking skills saw her build an unassailable lead, with Quinn moving into 2nd place.
Other notable performances of the day included Trevor Jacobs, winning the men's masters category despite having run the veteran's half marathon that morning in 77 minutes! Gary Rolfe also completed the double. In the veteran's categories, Simon Tilley and Jane Roots both made it 4 wins from 4 starts.
