After the 7am Friday 15km swim start, ACT local Brock Mckinlay, winner in 1998,
established an early lead, breaking his own swim record by around 25 minutes.
The calm conditions on the 500m triangular lap course made for fast times, with
team swimmer Troy Sullivan winning the swim overall. Another local, Marty Boyd,
who was talked into the race by his training mates at Tridents after failing to
qualify for Ironman Australia, was around 20 minutes down with Rob Zwierlein
less than 10 minutes further in arrears.
The tight new 2.4km lap bike course at Exhibition Park for the 400km bike leg
starting 5:30pm Friday evening allowed the field to keep close contact with each
other. Good lighting conditions and road surface further helped competitors to
post quick times. Rob Zwierlein powered away to an early lead over Brock and
Marty who were also riding strongly. After faltering a little at 100km, Rob
picked up again and closed the time gap to Brock to under 5 minutes after the
bike. Marty was around 45 minutes down, and 1999 winner Paul Every was now over
3 hours off the pace - only a miracle on the run could bring him back into
contention this year. The strong local contingent this year also included Carl
Allars, back for a 2nd time, Chris Gippel and Andrew Watt. Czech Republic's
Robert Hybler was competing in his 2nd ever triathlon, his first being the
gruelling Sri Chinmoy Triple Triathlon last November, a 150km off-road adventure
over 9 legs around the hills and lakes of Canberra!
The 100km run started at midnight Saturday over a 1.7km lap undulating course,
and this year incorporated the Australian 100km road championship. Mike Wheatley
made it look all too easy in 7:43, dominating over veteran M45 local legend
Trevor Jacobs on 8:31. Trevor is multiple winner of the 54km Brindabella
Classic, Australia's toughest downhill race, and has previously run 7:06 over
100km! Rudi Kinshofer wasn't far behind on 8:42 in third place. The women's race
saw a remarkable performance by 70 year old Shirley Young running 10:59, and
breaking the age world record by over 2 hours, and beating half the men in the race!
In the individual race Rob Zwierlein and Marty Boyd were running strongly for
first and second, also filling out the top 5 overall in the 100km. Brock
Mckinlay's margin of over 4 hours from the rest of the field was enough to gain
him 3rd placed individual, after having a very tough time on the run. Once the
sun came up the day warmed to over 30 degrees, making life very tough for the
tail end of the field.
