Ken Uren and Belinda Cheney took out the ACT Duathlon Championships.
Cool, overcast and breezy conditions prevailed with fast times being
posted.
Stephen Isbel led from Paul Smith after the first run, however the 32km
bike leg, two laps of Lake Burley Griffin, was where the stromger
cyclists made their move. Stewart Campbell led in after the bike leg
with evergreen veteran Ken Uren, gold medallist in his age group at the
1998 World Triathlon Championships in Lausanne, not far in arrears and
the faster runners a minute or two behind. Uren showed his legendary
strength running off the bike to hang onto the lead, finishing 30
seconds ahead of junior Rowan McIntyre who is vying for selection in the
junior elite category for the world duathlon championships in Calais on
October 8. Stewart Campbell finished 3rd.
In the women's race Belinda Cheney and Jane Zeller were neck and neck at
the end of the first run, then ACT Academy of Sport athlete Cheney,
currently training for the Ironman Triathlon World Championships in
Hawaii on October 14, surged away on the bike and was never threatened.
Zeller was 2nd with Fiona Hedgecoe third.
