Paul Smith (psmith@pcug.org.au) filed this report with Nick Munting's OzTri Diary:

Sunday the 22nd November marked the third running of the Sri Chinmoy Triple Triathlon in Canberra, arguably the toughest one day multi-sport event in Australia! (I'll argue for it)

The event comprises 3 complete triathlons. The swims total 6km in three of Canberra's man made lakes. The mountain bike (100km total) and run legs (44 km total) traverse a rugged landscape with 90% dirt trails, all in the heart of the nation's capital.

The course provides the ultimate scenic tour of the city and environs, with spectacular views from 10 separate peaks covering the entire region.

The winner of the inaugural event was Ben Bright, one of Australia's elite triathletes and a former World Junior Triathlon Champion!

This years event attracted 22 keen individuals, and 116 teams totalling 670 competitors. Ninety race officials were needed to marshal the event!

John Fleming lead out a group including 1998 winner and course record holder, Paul Smith and Stu Adams in the first 1.5km swim in 20 minutes. A quick transition gave Smith the lead for a brief 7km until the tough terrain dealt him a broken chain and the need for some hasty repairs, dropping him back to ninth.

Stu Adams and James Nicholson, who has an 8:40 Ironman to his name, lead after the first ride. Smith managed to peg them both back shortly after the first of two big mountain ascents on the first 20km run leg. He had extended his lead to 15 minutes after the next long 3.5 km swim in very windy and choppy conditions.

Nicholson rode well in MTB 2 to get within five minutes of the lead, but from there on Smith extended the lead to nearly 26 minutes by the finish.

Paul Smith now has back to back victories and his victory also saw him set a new course record of 10:33:17, with James Nicholson second in 10:59:10. Martin Boyd, second in both previous races, stormed home for third in 11:27:27, with his now traditional strong finish to pass a fading Adams (11:32:41). Mark Davis held off a fast finishing Dave Baldwin to finish just out the top five.

Jody Purcell, a former top 10 finisher at the Australian Ironman and the only female entrant this year, smashed the women's course record by over 40 minutes. She finished in an impressive 12:46:43.

17 of the 22 individuals finished the tough course, with the final competitor, Ian Endicott crossing the line after an epic 13km cross country run in the pitch dark, in a time of 17:39:50.

The team competition was very intense this year, with all 3 person and 9 persons male/female/mixed teams breaking the existing race records. The outright team course record is now held by Off-Track triathletes in 8:54:06.

Check out World Sports on SBS at 7.00PM on Friday the 27th November, for coverage of the race.
