Triathlon ACT 1999-2000 Summer Calendar and Results

Results

A tough day for racing, with the rain coming down from 9:30am for the rest of the day. The first bike leg and, for most, the first run was cool and dry, but after that it was cold and wet, and the only word to describe the later bike legs is FILTH! Brake and gear failures were the order of the day, with many riders learning the frustration of chain suck and brake pad wear for the first time.

Individual results and TEAMS results.

Paul Smith led the individual field from the start, and was never threatened, although the wet and cold conditions slowed him, especially on the last bike leg. David Baldwin put in a strong first bike leg moving into second position off Black Mountain, then ran strongly over Mt Majura and Mt Ainslie to build his margin, and continued strongly improving his time from last year by 32 minutes. Martin Boyd chased hard and was within 10 minutes until the last bike leg when he flatted, losing a lot of time and depriving him of the opportunity to put in his trademark strong finish to try for second place. Brenden Hargraves put in a solid debut performance for 4th place, and Jamin Forbes improved his time from last year for 5th.

Competition in the teams categories was ferocious. The 3 top placed male teams of three had developed an intense level of hype between themselves by e-mail in the preceding months and were truly fired up on the day, dedicating the race to long-time mate Chris Cook who died tragically in the Australian Mountain Running Champs earlier this year. Cookie would never hold back, and was a keen and very competitive runner and rapidly improving MTB rider. In this spirit, the 3 teams had a battle royale throughout the day, rarely more than minutes apart over the nearly 9 hours of racing, and it came down to the final run to decide the race. Hopefully the full story will be told for all to hear. Meanwhile, the Canberra Cycles team finally realized the ambition of team manager Ben Harvey of taking out the outright race, smashing the course record by more than 10 minutes! The winning mixed team of 3 also knocked the record for six, taking 45 minutes off the previous best! All this on a slower course with the wet conditions, plus course changes also adding a little more distance and time over previous years.

Graphs

The following graphs show cumulative time for individuals and teams as a percentage of the winner's time after each leg of the race. Note that it is not a strictly accurate representation of absolute positions on race day, because teams of 3 start 5 minutes ahead of teams of greater than 3 - I have done another graph of that if anyone cares...
