Perfect weather conditions and a late change of race site, saw spectaular racing at the "Acumen Alliance Challenge" ACT Aquathlon Championships on Sunday 20 January. Thanks to Acumen Alliance's generous sponsorship there was over $2500 in prizemoney which attracted the strongest field yet seen at this event. It is hoped that the race will gain Australian Championship status in the future.
Simon Thompson was in fantastic form, backing up from a 2nd place in the National series race last weekend on the Gold Coast. By the end of the first run he had a narrow lead and was never threatened. Ross Blake followed Queensland visitor Levi Fleming into the water and quickly pulled away to finish in 2nd, with Luke Keogh also using his fast swim to build up a handy buffer for the last run, taking third place.
In the women's race it was a welcome return to multi-sport racing for Sarah Fien, with Raeleigh Tennant and Michelle Gallen also in contention in the strong field. Fien had a lead after the first run, but during the swim the three closed up leaving the water in a pack. Once Sarah regained her land legs she powered away again, with Raeleigh's stronger run gaining her 2nd place over Michelle.
After taking out the top 3 placings, prizemoney of $50 and $30 was paid in 10-year age groups.
In females under 20, 13 year old Patricia McKibbin showed most of
the field a clean pair of heels placing 21st overall with Nicole Norris 2nd. Shanyn Sparreboom had a strong final run in females 20-29 to pull away from Belinda Cheney, back from injury and training
for Ironman New Zealand as a lead up to Ironman Australia. In 30-39 Julie Forster from Macarthur Tri was 1st from Caroline Gathercole. Club-mate and
Jo-Anne Danne who has won her age group at Ironman Hawaii narrowly beat Julie home and was well ahead of local Sue Bowden in females 40-49,
while a very much in form Kay Dixon led Lindy Dunn home by a couple of minutes.
In males under 20, Queensland visitor Levi Fleming out-classed local Will Draper. In 20-29 John Fleming worked hard to hold off
flying Stuart Bardsley whose swim and run continue to improve. Males 30-39 saw a sprint to the line between Nathan Spillane and Perry Blackmore
who were hardly separated for the whole race. Geoff Hawke cruised into 1st place in 40-49 with Alex Gosman 2nd. Richard Norris's hard work
in the pool and on the trails paid off with Russell Wenholz very pleased with 2nd. The race's oldest competitor Geoff Llewellyn out-classed
the competition in over 60 with Anthony Brunskill taking 2nd.
In the junior/novice event Kate Fitzpatrick and Jared Henry held off their challengers, winning $30 prize vouchers from the Runners Shop.
Richard Norris was the lucky winner of the major barrel draw prize from Canberra Cycles - a Lightfoot Steamer wetsuit valued at $600.
