2001 Lonsdale St Cyclery Offroad Duathlon Series Race 1

The first offroad race of the season was a big success despite it being a long weekend and the competing attractions of the GMC race.
The short race saw nearly 30 starters, many competing offroad for the first time, from under 10s on BMX bikes to over 50s on commuter bikes. The men's race was a sprint to the line with veteran Jeremy Logan just beating junior Richard Thomas. Jane Scheer won the women's race.
The long race included a bit more technical singletrack and a few sharp climbs. A number of people not seen racing for a while came out of the woodwork to join the field of 50 starters. The men's race saw last year's series winner Dave Osmond lead from the start with Adrian Sheppard and Paul Smith battling it out for the minor placings. The women's race was also hotly contested with Sara Hely and top orienteer Allison Jones going head to head, Allison pulling away late in the bike leg and Sara unable to respond in the final run. The next race in the series will be held on 21 July. The short race will be over the same course, with the long race stretching out to a 4/16/4 distance.
