2001 Lonsdale St Cyclery Offroad Duathlon Series Race 3

Rain was forecast and ominous clouds hung overhead during the morning. Along with the best snow all season and Scotty Preston's bucks night the previous night, the field was somewhat depleted. Luckily the short race was mostly finished before a brief heavy shower, but during the long race a steady light rain set in. The long race used the same run as the short race, with the bike a similar course to the previous race, with the first section changed to replace the gullies by the river with the singletrack used previously for the run course but ridden in the opposite direction. Transition skills were tested, with some competitors choosing to use toe-clips and running shoes on the bike.
This time it was Paul Atyeo who led the field, with Dave Osmond away racing in the Australian half marathon championships in Noosa. Ben Geier took 2nd place, with fast-improving Carl Fellows taking 3rd. In the women's race, Julie Quinn managed to hold off niggling ITB problems, quickly moving into the lead onto the first bike leg and riding away from the rest of the field. Minor placings were also the same, with Belinda Allison second and Adair Ferguson third. There were also 3 competitors in the long race who were backing up after the veterans half marathon that morning - Steve Bradford, Trevor Jacobs and Gary Rolfe - all of whom had run 80 minutes or faster for that race!
In the short race Simon Gallacher and Roger Broughton's team again dominated, with newcomer Peter Evans winning the men's race and Karen Daly again holding off Annie Ferguson in the women's race.
