2000/2001 SunSmart Triathlon Series Race 3

300m swim, 8km bike, 2km run

Despite the heat and the extra Christmas kilos over 160 novices stepped out to take part in the SunSmart race three. It was without a doubt the hottest conditions participants had to experience so far this summer but obviously everyone headed the advice to drink , drink and drink some more. And worth noting too for those novices still a bit wary about the condition of the lakes water - a recent article in the Canberra Times gave it a bill of good health!! I doubt though that the winners of the mens event even noticed the murkiness of the Lake as they focussed like true professionals at the race at hand . And given that the first to third winners were in the 12-15 years age group one can only wonder what potential lays ahead. Philip Clarke finished first in 25 minutes 39 minutes against Liam Templeton (25.52) and Thomas Harrison (26.39). It was a different story for the womens race where the winners age - groups were a bit more spread out. However winner Holly Hutton is still a junior (16-19) and managed to take out the race in 29 minutes 22 seconds , closely followed by Mel Podger (25-29) and Vicki Godfrey (20-24) . There were a few courageous soles who did both the novice race and the sprint champs the following morning. Jennifer Allard was one such person - making sure her trip from the south coast was well worth it. Congratulations to those who competed in their first triathlon for the year 2001 - or some might say the Millenium!!! Don't forget you have plenty of time to train for the fourth and final race of the year in the Sunsmart Series on 24 February 2001. Race Report by Julia Keith
