2000/2001 TACT CUP Triathlon Series Race 2 CLASSIC DISTANCE CHAMPS1500m swim,40km bike,10km run Elite Results Race Report By Julia Keith ACT Classic Distance Championships TACT Cup Race 2 was very much a 'classic' not only in distance but in the caliber of racing that took place. Casey Guthrie certainly showed his elders what he can do - storming home to win not only his 16-19 year age group - but the race outright. Ironically the five athletes that followed also won their age groups - but it wasn't necessarily in aged order. Scott Weaver was first 30-34 years and a close second overall to Gavin Godkin who snatched third and took out his 20-24years age group. Rod Pickering, Shane Rattenbury and Steve Hogg took out the minor placings from 4th to 6th but all managed a first in their respective age groups 35-39, 25-29, and 40-44 years. Life member Fred Allsopp - also affectionately known as fat Fred - did not live up to his nick name and made an impressive return to racing winning his 50-54year age group and posting a 15th overall position. Another familiar face, Triathlon Australia's High Performance Manager Emery Holmick, also participated after a long absence from racing. And while he knows only too well how hard triathlons can be he remembered post race exactly how hard "they hurt". The women were well represented with Symeko Jochinke showing excellent form posting a 2hour 15min time to take out first place. Second place Chris Toohey never seems to show any signs of aging and took out her 40-44year group as well. Amanda Murtagh was third also capping off a win in her 35-39 year age. Worth noting too was the efforts of Geoff Llewellyn first in the 65-69 age group who has overcome some serious injuries to be back as strong as ever!! Well Done to all other age - group winners ; David Morewod 45-49years Emily Whitten 30-34 F Jane Banenoch - Jones 45-49 F Ken Murtagh 60-64 M John Rogers 55-59 M Louise Mackin 20-24 F Teams Team competitors did a grand job in sharing the load with Tom Butlin, John Seeck and David Parks winning the Team Male category by a whisker to rivals Team Mixed made up of Karen O'Halloran , Nicholas Thomson and Adrian Rumore. Winners of Team Female were the combination of Robyn Barker and Anne Gripper - who despite having navigation problems in the swim - made amends to take victory. Go Girls!! Teams have proved a great introduction into the longer distance for novices or for those coming back from injury - and this was only too true for the team who came second in the all female category. Lindy Dunn recovering from knee surgery teamed with Sandy Waters and Angela Rymer. Angela began triathlons last year in the novice series and had a goal of running the entire 3km of the run without stopping. One year later and she is running over 10km in training !! Her 10km run on Sunday was a PB. ( This is what happens when you live next door to the ex Executive Officer.) Elite Race The Elite spoke for themselves especially race winners Simon Thompson and Belinda Cheney. They have certainly set the standard for the season and how exciting it will be for us to watch them race in the televised formula one!!! Elite Women Not to be outdone though was Raeleigh Tennants strong second after coming back from a messy preparation from sickness. Jane Kargotich who is definitely the new kid on the block posted an impressive third. Birthday girl Michelle Hunter got a reminder of what turning 30 is all about " Blood , sweat and tears!!! ". And while she didn't exactly get the place she wished for - she did get the prize for the fastest flat tyre change split!! Elite Men Simon literally blitzed the field showing off the dramatic improvement he has made from last season. The question is how much more can this boy improve!!! It was also interesting to see the men finish minutes apart - where normally it is seconds. A sign of a well fought out race. A solid effort by Jason Chalker put him in second place well ahead of Luke Grattan who seems to be making a come back. Stuart Bardsley and Jeremey Kimpton took out fourth and fifth. Juniors Due to the selection of the Youth Olympic Triathlon Festival the Juniors raced separately with the first three over the line to qualify. It proved to be a most competitive race with the Junior Men stretching themselves to the limit. Luke Keogh had that little bit extra to out sprint Gareth Halverson for first place. Gareth can breath easily though in his selection into the team together with third place getter Marc Williams. The girls race started out as a close battle - but at the end of the day Adelaide Brown had the legs and ran well to break away from close rival Naomi Orchard. Rebecca Page finished well to take third. ELITE RESULTS
